C.,F. and myself once (=eight years ago) had theis infamous idea of a unique split-7" label, entitled shipshap. we asked a couple of bands we love (Tara Jane O'Neil, Ida, Plus/Minus, Stereo Total, Lou Barlow, Mary Timony), most of them were if not always super enthusiastic, then at least interested. Brezel was the only one to send us something in order to get an idea of what he was ready to contribute, Tara wrote us one nice letter, Ida and Plus Minus seemed super-happy, but never sent ANYTHING, and so, in the end, our personal laziness and individual handicaps helping, we never made it.

ach ja.

this 7" is amazing. Brezel is still doing great music. we should ask him again.

(Dave, have you noticed the concert ticket? i have to say that at that time, i found you quite quirky...)

i discovered her thanks to En Avoir (Ou Pas), a french movie directed by Laetitia Masson, starring Sandrine Kiberlain, that came out in 1995 and was shown on TV5 two years later en boucle - that's how i had the privilege to watch it four times within a week (i'm not kidding).

quite unique film. among my alltime top ten. the soundtrack features Nick Drake (at that time still semi-obscure, no big reissue-campaign), Marianne Faithfull (doing SHE, written by Badalamenti!), Cheb Mami, and Polly (doing The Dancer)

i remember getting my first Teenbeat order (done by fax - those were the days), while at my relatives' home in Aylmer, Ontario. i was seventeen years old, first time in north america, absolutely everything during that stay unique and unforgettable, read: e v e r y t h i n g.

so i opened the heavy overstamped cardboard, found the rad Air Miami & Tuscadero t-shirts - that are still in service -, awesome stickers (VSNY, you know), a couple LPs and 7inches, and the gorgeous The Stars Are Insane CD, Versus' first album.

and, that's why this is being told here, an overenthusiastic letter written by the mailorder-guy, saying how much he was in love with Versus, that he was listening to the Dead Leaves comp and the Secret Swingers lp 24hours a day, and so on. this was (or at least seemed to me - but seriously, who cares about that difference?) honest, sincere stuff, not the 'we appreciate your business'-thing. and gave me the feeling of being, hm, part of a youth movement, to quote a german band i never was interested in, even though almost all my friends were. (you'll get some candies if you can tell me what i'm talking about.)

so, here comes Versus' contribution to the mémorable (yep, that's bloody québécois) Simple Machines Working Holidays split 7" project. no real surprise, they got the first series-release.

in the fall of 2004, i went to a Magnolia Electric Co. show at Sala Rossa in Montréal. I sincerely thought, five minutes after the show had started, that it was meant as a deeply ironic Neil Young tribute (at least in comparison to the Songs:Ohia show i had been at five years before in Brighton, where Molina had been all alone on stage).

it was not, of course. needless to say, i quickly left the show.

on this Western Vinyl 7" - it's the last post with that tag on, one goal achieved... - Molina takes another kind of Youngish path. Less americana, more Dead Man style, he's overtly quoting one guitar riff of the soundtrack.

definitely an essential song in his extensive discography.

digitalizing the song i  was confronted to a typical problem: the exact speed of a vinyl record. the label of this 7" indicates how long the songs 'lasts' - 4:18 for 2 spades.
so what? well, my Numark's pitch being at '0', the song only takes 04:01!

so what i did was to re-record it, lowering the pitch, to get a 4:18-version (that sounds way too slow!).
tell me what version you prefer.
