NO KIDS prisoner of desire

.
heroes.

P:ANO-members reinventing white arhhennbee.

their last year album is already a classic. (on that one, Tomlab Records deserves recognition.)

the only band i know that, in my humble opinion, really deserved the grant they got from the federal canadian government.

never played it at parties without being asked about it by charming people.

a bit too nerdy on stage, i have to admit.
next time they come to your town , bring your winds and share the stage with them - i'm quite sure they would appreciate.

did i mention they're friends and active collaborators of PHIL ELVERUM?

listen.

and please, please, listen to this! please.

buy as long as you can!

.

PAPA M mama you been on my mind

.
David Pajo. no posture. just a man doing what he has to do.

listen. (again, apologies for the warped piano-sound)

.

BLACK LIPS i'll be with you

.
R. offered me this one as a birthday present. i have to say i wasn't really enthusiastic, having deliberately passed on their show this summer.

R. , i have to ask your forgiveness.

listen.

.

LULLABY FOR THE WORKING CLASS in honour of my stumbling

.
apologies for the wobbling sound - the turntable i'm using for the digitalizing process is unable to compensate the poor pressing quality.

listen.

.

FAUSTO LEALI a chi

.
a song where you can't decide whether to laugh or to cry.

listen.

.

BEARSUIT duran duran

.
anyone to bring them to Berlin?

if not, i'll end up doing this job.

listen.

.

AMERICAN ANALOG SET the only living boy around

.
I. loved that band. together, we went to a show they played at the old Bastard club, in the wet summer of 2002.
A. from Puschen had booked the show. he was standing in the crowd, and didn't seem really convinced about the uniqueness of the band on stage. i told him that to me, they were like sensual Bedhead.
he didn't seem to agree.

three and a half years later, i saw them in Montreal, on their very last tour.
the mystery of desire was still omnipresent.

this band will never sound old-fashioned.
listening to them, boldly actions will always be taken for granted.

listen.

.

VERSUS (go tell it on the) mountain

.
designed by Kicking Giant's Tae Won Yu, who also made the artwork for this 7".

a Versus-smasher that doesn't appear on the Dead Leaves-comp.

if only i had seen them playing live at that time...

listen.

.

PJ HARVEY 66 promises

.
one of her best songs to not have been released on an album, if you ask me.

listen.

.

TRIO anna - lassmichrein lassmichraus

.
for you non german-readers -one of the most prominent Neue Deutsche Welle - acts.

a very specific westgerman type of offish laconic irony that seems to have completely disappeared from the public space.

listen.

.

HEAVEN TO BETSY my secret

.
Not an International Punk Underground 7", but a straight PUNK1-release on K Records - and a split with Bratmobile!

what a song.

this is more than a rriotgirl-fetishobject. this is da real thing.

listen.

.

PALACE BROTHERS drinking woman

.
the b-side from Will Oldham's first Palace Brothers' 7".

a classic.

no, i'm not gonna argue about his decline. not this time.

listen.

.

DEAD SCIENCE throne of blood

.
nothing to add to what i've already said about this band.

besides NO KIDS, the most underrated band of 2008, if you ask me.

a revelation.

listen.

.

PHILEMON ARTHUR AND THE DUNG jag mar sa illa

.
swedish Jandek-like mysterious saints, but international nobodys - i had to buy this obscure split 7" in Tokyo to discover them.

early seventies. hard to believe. they got the swedish grammy in 1971!

during me second Montréal-stay, i had one of his songs as my voicemail-message.

listen.

.

JIM O' ROURKE despite the water supply (part 1)

.
this man is a genious.

(now that's a redundant comment!)

two ways of enjoying that piece - both are highly pleasant.

listen at 33rpm.

listen at 45rpm.

HOOD winter will set you back

.

everything seems so close.

and, in the end (that is: everyday), remains unattainably far.

yes, i'm talking about sunsets and reputedly lived relationships.

TY SEGALL standing at the station

.
recently bought at Bis Aufs Messer. attracted by the artwork, but never heard of the band or the label.

S. was quite surprised to find this 7" in my collection - presuming that I didn't have a clue of the new West Coast thing - after he had given me a supadupa limited THEE OH SEES 7" as a present, and me not knowing anything about them.

this band is pure fun.

listen.

.

BROADCAST we've got time

.
their gig at MTC in Cologne, in the spring of 2000, was the first time i left a show because of deep disappointment with the performance.

that night, they were nothing but blasé and presumptuous art-students doing their band-thing.

the probably most valuable, next to the Mogwai 7" outstanding Wurlitzer Jukebox release.
a classic, by all means.

listen.

.

POP TARTS berliner weisse

.
nothing significant to add to the previous posts.

pure pre-millenium west berlin spirit.

bought at their very last show, in the late spring of 2002.

the first time i heard this song was in U's golf, on the way to a picnic in the Potsdam region, on the sunny may 1st, in the year 2001.
back then, we were young.

listen.

.

HOOD i've forgotten how to live

.
pure Hood. half laconic irony, half offensive despair.

PJ HARVEY & NICK CAVE henry lee

.
to not think that this song is pathetic, you need two more glasses of wine. and, needless to say, true heartache.

CATERINA CASELLI il volto della vita

.
this song is part of a tape that my family listened to for years while on summer holidays, mostly while driving .
only italian canzones, from the late fifties to the early eighties - my father spent three years of this childhood in Rome.

many years later, i rediscovered that tape while cleaning up the family house. the distinctive class of Caterina Caselli was instantly evident.
together with Dave and all the other friends involved in La Guerre Des Tuques, we covered Perdono (with german lyrics performed by a lady who didn't know what she was singing) on our last show, in the early summer of 2005. probably our best performance ever.

just compare Caselli to any of the british or french singers of the sixites. see?

recently, i tried to start a little Caselli-hype by buying a bunch of 7inches via ebay.it and trying to resell them in the most repected record store in town. guess what? the one posted was sold for 25€! the other two are still for sale, though.

more to be posted from her, i promise.

probably the best WFTD-release ever, both musically and visually.

buy.

.

POSSUM MOODS slip stream

.
one of Jen Turrell's numerous musical outfits.

i do like that.

listen.

buy.

.

FENTON WEILLS jour de fête

maybe the biggest cinephile Elvis-fan on this planet.
